Virtuous Women, Haunted Women

Sarvagun sampan (90s to….)

She’s the spectre that haunts the kitchen,
Cooking, cleaning, scrubbing
Unseen.
She mass produces the food
Uncredited, unappreciated
The chowk and tadka, her only identity.

Srawgun sampan (2000s)

Her hands fly over the chopping board
That is her guillotine
Between the house and the office
She’s lost meaning
all she recalls?
Is the label selfish-
For working beyond the stove
For she should prioritize the household
And treat the office like a luxury
(Without ever stopping earning.)

Srawgun sampan
The bane of the Indian woman.

Author’s Note: While srawgun sampan is a blessing which we all want and is in no means a horrible thing, the ideal of a woman can take a toll on humans. I’m glad less and less women go through, the movie Mrs. and how much it resonates, shows that women do go through this and we can do better as a society.
