Humanity Says Hope Is A Thing with Feathers

The water logged streets
The sun burnt pavements
The dry rivers
The fallen trees-
Sometimes I wonder have we failed as a society?
When I see from my car window,
A child shivering under a downpour
When I sit in my air conditioned home
And read about farmers suffering from droughts
I feel we failed as humanity
And yet my hand stops
Knowing that if the AC goes, the nosebleed returns-
But I also know electricity isn’t infinite
And I wonder, have we failed-
But then a bird sings on the mango tree on my sill
And a woman hands water to the hawker standing underneath
No strings attached, just smiles
And I sigh in relief-
While my fingers type a request
Can parts of our society switch to renewable energy?
Failure is temporary
Tomorrow is another day,
A brand new beginning-
And humanity is more than one being.
