Half Read Stories

Some thoughts on how well we know people through their art that remains.

How little do we know of the inner workings of those whom we follow,
Was Issac Netwon just a man who saw an apple fall?
Of course, NOT!
But all we have are records, snippets from his life-
And I look at the contradiction that is mine,
And wonder what parts of his or everyone else’s aren’t ever going to be mined?
The prayers written as a source of support on a post by the ateist-
The festivals celebrated for family or for community by the agnostic
The feminist who wears sindoor because she likes it-
But behind closed doors stands up against patrairchy-
And all that’s left of them are the public events-
Some private entries on paper-
Yet, no matter what we try, can we truy capture
The human condition of being a being capable of contradictions,
Of nuance, of complexity,
Or do we reduce everyone in the end to a neat story?

Author’s Note: Just some thoughts I was dancing with this past week. An important reminder to balance self-preservation with kindness and community. You can read more of my work on our store, while we wait for our free online reading website, Muses_Saga to be restored.
