when i was a girl,
my mother showed me how to bake cookies,
put them in the mould, she said,
to make them appetizing.
….fast forward a decade later
I have built the life for me
And then I go to see her ageing skin,
White hair, toothy smile,
Filled with love for me,
And I fall back into wondering- if everything that makes me happy truly does so,
If I can’t be just as satisfied or even more
In what she wanted for me
Or what seems more stable
Or what she has always done.
i fall back, into the cookie cutter moulds given to girls like me
A good corporate job, a husband that earns well, a family that nags
And suddenly all these things look divine
I go back, a grown woman with accomplishments under her belt,
Only to return a child who’s wondering if the grass is greener on the other side
Fitting into the cookie cutter mould,
In which my mother spent her entire life.
(The cookies were delicious though…)
