Oh, Girl Lost in A Sand-storm- A Poem

The world is overwhelming
Can I be a piece of sand
Lost in millions with no purpose, no bills, no understanding
Of the toxicity we wade through
Just to make it
Another day.
Can I please be a grain of sand
To be lost in the vastness of the desert
With no sense of responsibility
And yet, given the choice I would try to be kind-
To bear witness where I can
But when does kindness to the world
Turn into harsh judgement bestowed upon my imperfect self
(Living with systems that are at best first drafts,
And at worst, items best left on the chopping board)
Is lost on me.

And so the overwhelming world screams

Just survive, just do what it takes!
But my soul is heavy-
And the desert seems like a good place to walk
Into a sand storm in.
(But I know that’s not the solution,
So I soak my feet, look for fair trade chocolate, and remember what grace to myself feels like,
For charity begins at home,

And I will serve my community,
Thus watering myself, as I have made space for them to help me.)
