Red Lips, Bare Lips

Red lips are beautiful,

Bare lips are unpresentable

Those are norms taught to women without words,

Beta, its just a blush!

Look how pretty you’re, all dressed up-

Was I undressed before?

Is combing my curls not enough? Are braids not art too?

Why should I powder my nose just so

And then hear you call me vain for taking pride in my appearance!

Whether I do, or whether I don’t

I remain damaned

My options are a vain girl too focused on looks

(Despite my degrees, my quick makeup tips,

Despite that I do it for me

For my confidence?)

Or

My options are a girl who doesn’t know how to behave

For she would rather not powder her face

In an age, where women are supposed to have the choice

On how to decorate their bodies.

At the end, its all about how to make women seem failed,

Whether I do or whether I don’t

Their job is to make me feel damned.

Too bad, I am pheonomenoal,

And like a phoenix from the ashes of their bards

I shall rise, with my sisters, brothers, and siblings,

Our red lips, our black lips, our bare lips

All ready to face their strife-

Our peals break their glass ceilings

And from their ashes we rise.

Author’s Note: Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and not just you choose your beholders, you choose what makes you beautiful. Kindness and health are the goals. To read more of my work, please head to Muses_Saga. If you wish to support this blog you can share or pay what you want.
