A Sinner’s Poetry

A poem on feeling like society has treated you unfairly and judged you.

I often think you invoke poetry in me
And people think that’s wonderful
A muse!

But what they don’t know
These verses are repressed hurt
A lifetime of being pulled down

Othered
A lifetime of being called the problem

Othered
For simply failing to conform
(But who will?
To a household run by mental illness.)

Othered
For choosing to be well

Othered
For choosing happiness
(But what choice was there,
Letting society bleed me dry?)

Othered
For choosing balance

Othered
For never causing harm
(They would rather I slowly disappear,
regretting the life I lived at fifty.)

Othered
For wanting change
(Wondering if anything will ever change)

Yes, I’m wrong
If not chasing for everyone’s approval is a vice-

Yes, I’m a sinner

And I suppose sin is poetic
When it’s you delivering the divine justice.
